Educated at the Royal art academy in Copenhagen in 1888. Pupil of F. Vermehren, J. Exner and O. Bache. Attended the art school of Zahrtmann in 1891. Later traveled to Paris and attended The Academy Julian in Paris from 1892-1894. Was during his stay in Paris a pupil of Jules Lefebvre. Ussing was born in Ribe, a town in southern Jutland, Denmark. Ussing often expressed his passion for the special colours and charm found in the Danish landscapes near his home and stated that he always got homesick even if he was staying at Montmatre in Paris or at Capri in Italy. Ussing was primarily a naturalistic artist and very fond of details. However after Ussings stay at Paris his style changed from naturalism to a mild form of impressionism. Ussing is known for his great details and charming colours. He often painted landscapes and street scenes and was especially fond of churches. Ussing also worked as an artist on the Royal porcelain fabric in Denmark until 1930.
