Hansen was ahead of his time concerning impressionism in Denmark and was refused servial times when he tried to enter the Danish Royal Art Academy. Hansen never gave up and continued painting and became a pupil of Zahrtmann and attended his art school. Later hansen formed a lifetime friendship and co operation with the Norwegian impressionists Ludvig Karsten and Henrik Lund where they painted and inspired of each other’s work. Hansen is known for his very detailed and powerful impressionistic scenes where he used strong dominant colors mixed with French impressionistic lights. After Hansens death in 1946 his paintings were compared with the art of Henri Matisse, and Hansen got the nick-name The Danish Matisse. Niels Hansen has been exhibited all over in Scandinavia and in Germany and eastern Europe.
