Dorph was educated at the Royal art academy in 1879 and attended Kröyers Artists school in 1884 where he was a pupil of both P.S Kröyer and L. Tuxen. Dorph is primarily known for his many detailed portraits of famous Danish poets and politicians, but is also known for his detailed still-lifes and landscapes. Dorph was the founder of the Danish art newspaper “ Kunst” in 1899 and later became the head of the “ kunstindustriskolen” an art school for women. Besides painting, Dorph also decorated many buildings in Copenhagen. His most known work is the large hall of the Danish National Bank in 1924.
