Drews was educated at the technical school of art and at other private art schools.
He has been exhibited widely in Scandinavia and Europe. Drews was primarily a landscape painter and known for his romantic and traditional landscapes from Zealand and Dyrehaven in Denmark. Drews was heavily inspired by the Danish master painter Peter Mønsted and Mønsteds influence is noticeable in Drews art.
Kai Drews is the brother of artist Svend Drews (1919-2003)
