Hilkier was known for his impressionistic and modern landscapes and harbor sceneries. He was greatly influenced by the French artists and traveled many times to Paris to work. Hilkier was educated at the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen in 1907. His fame and visionary works of art provided him later a membership of the Jury of the academy from 1933-1937. Hilkiers work has been exhibited many places in Scandinavia and at the Danish National museum of art.
