Johannes Wilhjelm was a close friend and pupil of the Danish master painter Zahrtmann. Their relationship grew even closer when Zahrtmanns sister married Johannes Wilhjelm brother. Wilhjelm was first a pupil of P.S Krøyer in 1893 and later a pupil of Zahrtmann in 1903. Wilhjelm and Zahrtmann traveled often to Italy to work together. In Italy Wilhjelm got strongly inspired by the scenes and made several light-filled and powerful landscapes. When returning to Denmark, Wilhjelm concentrated working with Danish farm landscapes where he received fame and attention from his colourful but serious portraits of farmers and peasants at work.
