Helvig Kinch is best known as a painter of animals. She grew up close to Christiansburg’s royal horse stables, and spent her childhood watching the Danish king horses training and exercising in the court yard. Kinch favorite motif was horses and she painted and drew them all her life. Her drawings and paintings were so accuratly and with such detail that several of them were used as illustrations in scientific books. It was hard for a woman to be accepted as an artist in the late eighteenth century and this inspired Kinch to start the art union “Community of Female Artists” in 1916.
