Øllgaard was educated at the Royal Art Academy in 1931 and a private pupil of Alex Jørgensen from 1929-31. Øllgaards fame begun immediately in 1933 when his abstract and surrealistic oils was introduced at the Artists Fall Exhibition in Copenhagen. From that time Øllgaard became and remained an important and central Danish modern expressionist. Øllgaard co-funded the modernistic art group “Linien” in 1934. Other members of the art group was Richard Mortensen and Ejler Bille. Øllgaard is a typical Nordic expressionist and known for his very impressive and powerful landscapes portraits and forest scenes. Øllgaard was a passionate and lively character and continued painting even through the last 3 years of his life where he was severely handicapped due to sickness. Øllgaards art has been compared to the likes of Max Ernest and Edward Munch.
