Kraul was educated at the Royal Art Academy in 1887 and was later a pupil of the royal decorator Hansen Kjaer. Krauls paintings are known for their charming style and their romantic quality. Kraul was a naturalist but always added nostalgia to his paintings and artworks. From 1880-1896 Kraul traveled to Egypt, turkey, Germany and Greece. Kraul also worked for a long time in Bucharest where he did decorations in their churches. Besides painting, Kraul also worked with poster designs, book covers and decorated ceramic pieces.
