Elisabeth was the wife to the artist and author Hans Scherfig (1905-79) and has illustrated many of his books. She was born in Austria and was a pupil of Professor Franz Cizek in Vienna and Reinhold Klaus from 1921-26. After working as a teacher at the Walden-School, N.Y from 1928-29, she moved to Denmark where she meet Hans Scherfig and stayed there until her death in 1994. Elisabeth worked with many projects in Denmark and has decorated the Illum building in Copenhagen and did interior design for DSB: The Danish Train Company. Elisabeth was heavily inspired by the Danish modernistic art group “Corner” and she worked primary with expressive landscapes and portraits. Elisabeth is known for her light expressive landscapes where the light colours seams to glow from the canvas. Elisabeth Scherfig Karlinsky has been exhibited in Denmark, Vienna, Paris and New York.
