Larsen was educated at both the Scandinavian Academy of Art in Paris in 1926 and at the Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen in 1930. Larsen was greatly inspired by the artist Harald Giersing and was a pupil of Axel Jörgensen and Otte Skjöld. Larsen is known for his colourful motifs from Copenhagen and from the many foreign landscapes he painted abroad in countries like France, Spain, Germany, England and north Africa.
