Carlsen was educated at the Royal Art Academy in 1874 and later attended Kröyers art school in 1878. Carlsen worked primarily on landscapes and is known for his many sunlit landscapes from Dyrehaven and scenes from his travels to southern Italy. Carlsen worked frequently together with the artist Peder Mørk Mønsted with whom he traveled many times to Italy and to the Swiss alps in 1884.
