Toft was educated at the Royal Art Academy in 1899 and was a pupil of the master painters Otto Bache, Frants Henningsen and Fr Vermehren. Toft is especially known for his stunning bright colours and most of his paintings are very bright and sunlit. In 1902, Toft travelled to Florence in Italy where he stayed to study the Fresco technique. After tofts time in Italy he felt called by god and studied to be a priest. Toft continued to paint, but his motifs became more religious and he did a long series of sunlit church interiors and landscapes with cathedrals and churches. Besides painting, Toft also did many interior church decorations and has restored many Danish alter pieces.
